Make the World a Little Better

MAKE THE WORLD A LITTLE BETTER
© 11/3/2015 Ian Shires

Hell’s in the details -you can’t forgive or forget
All the time that’s been wasted on a moment’s regret
You may beg for the power –to change what could have been
But all you do is wallow in your personal sin

And we rise in the shine of a brand new day
Looking for something different to say
don’t you see what it meant for me to try
To make the world a little better before I die

You can pay any price –cause you’re not born with wealth
Everything is given to you even your mental health
The only way to move forward is to unlearn what they taught
And search for the secrets everyone else has forgot

Hell’s in decisions –you make out of fear
Playing safe is only the enemy getting near
If you don’t think you have the power –you can’t change anything today
And your hopes and dreams are the real price that you pay

Each day we rise in the shine of new chance to take
Don’t let your heart be the one that you break
Clearly see what I do every day to try
To make the world a little better before I die

THE REAL JOKE

THE REAL JOKE

I tried to tell you—the grass is always greener
There is no other side—you can’t be an in-betweener
Scrub away the markings it won’t get any cleaner
So keep sitting there like you’ve been hit with a beaner
No we’re not impressed by much
You think we’re out of touch
But the real joke—is—on—you
Even we haven’t heard it all
Waiting for the other shoe to fall
But there’s nothing—left—to—do……

I tried to give you—a leg-up on tomorrow
Show you the bright side so you could swat away the sorrow
That was the take away so you don’t have to beg steal or bowwor
No we’re not impressed by much
You think you have the midas touch
But the real joke—is—on—you
The winds that fills your sails
Will leave you stranded when it fails
Gonna leave you holding that—other—shoe…..

I tried to be there—so you’d have something to lean on
I didn’t understand—why you were already gone

In The Haze

I want to have – an animated tattoo
of a scorpion – that sits on my shoulder
and it moves around – daring people to touch it
and I’ll tell them that I can hear it’s thoughts
These are the things that run through my head
When I try to fall asleep
and I know there’s weirder things waiting for me
if i go too deep

There are sharp shards
in the colorswirl maze
where the shattered light
is competing for your gaze
…before it fades in the haze…

I want to draw you – to the edge of my brain
but words can’t tell – what you’re gonna see there
the drifts of meaning – won’t translate my hope
that the seeds of intention will find fertile ground
these are the things that run through my brain
when I try to fall asleep
They flash in succession just waiting for me
I wonder which thoughts i can keep

There are black dots
in the colorswirl maze
where the explosions of light
go to rest after they graze
…before they fade in the haze…

Only This Moment

The darkest moments of foreboding
      are spent contemplating change
There are hints of the better world
floating about and they drift in and out of range
But everything is intangible
you can’t grab hold of anything
So time controls what you think about
there’s no telling what the future will bring
          We only have this moment
          to seize any control
So I choose to look at you
Listen to echoes of your soul

Though we’ve been together these million years
That which is familiar always seems new
There’s no way to erase the heartaches or fears
but we can show ’em how our love grew

The fearful moments of torture
that lead up to making a change
shout for the chance for a better world
where it’s ok to embrace the strange
And when everything goes intangible
you think you’ve lost sight of everything
Don’t let time control what you think about
we’re gonna find out what the future can bring
And we only have this moment
to enjoy what our choices have made
So I’ll spend this time with you
          and let everything else fade

Madness Reigns

The Day is done – all that’s left is the closing down
can’t we leave for tomorrow – what should be finished now
have we not worked hard – peeled skin worked these fingers to the bone
No it leaves me no comfort – as I walk off alone
oh watch out tomorrow – I’ll be comin’ to give a show
cause that’s all that is left me – the empty charade
Madness reigns – in the land of the free and brave
Keep a firm grasp on your soul – for that’s all you can save
Madness reigns – yes we’re serving the chaos lords
See the twinkle in their eyes – turn into the flash of their swords

Impaled on the truth – and it pales by comparison
to the dream that still dances – in the back of my mind
have we not been strong – in the face of incredible odds
yes watch us keep laughing – at the jokes of the gods
Oh watch out tomorrow – I’ll awake with that smile on my face
you’ll see that I’ve lost my hold – in free fall I go
Madness reigns – in this world the ends are frayed
you can look back on the journey – to see where destiny’s made
Madness reigns – yes we’re serving the puppet kings
see the glint of their pearly whites – as they’re pulling the strings

I stand before you with nothing to prove – nothing to lose
and the name I’ve made for myself says it all
oh watch out tomorrow – if you come I will put on a show
as I jump through the hoops of the day – I’ll send my message clear

The Art of the Artist

Untie my hands – I need blood to my fingers
Unlock my door – I just gotta get out of here
Unclose your eyes – can’t you see what I’m fighting for
Don’t speak my name – Just let me walk away…

See my creation a pure thing of beauty
Ten versions before have been destroyed in my mind
Time to turn it over mass produce the product
Each one sickens me more they’re disgusting and vile

Hear my prayer for the art of the artist
May you find your way to your true destiny
Like the dancers plea to the gods with their bodies
Say: I’ll not create art for anyone but me

Slave to the grind searching for recognition
You’ve blown it already it’s tasteless and bland
You’ll never see anything more beautiful
Than the things you’ve created destroyed where you stand

My conflict within surely must be self evident
There’s nothing I crave more than a cheer when I’m done
I realize the performance is purely technical
But the music’s alive, given birth by someone

Hear my prayer for the art of the artist
May the gods see the vision you’re trying to have
Grant power to find the truth and the meaning…
Hear my prayer for the art of the artist
Untie my hands I need blood to my fingers
Unlock my door I just gotta get out of here
Unclose your eyes, can’t you see what I’m fighting for
Don’t speak my name – Just let me walk away…

BEING LOST

BEING LOST

Being lost as I am and have been
I’ve learned to accept the impossible-as truth
Reality bends ‘round the things I have seen
Things I’ve done through eyes of others-spent youth
Dreaming the dreams I now try to achieve
Speaking the words I want you to believe
Being lost as I am and have been

Being lost I’ve seen the unbeaten path
Miracles that somehow must happen-in time
Challenging fate you will first feel it’s wrath
Tries to scare you away then shows-the sign
Dreaming the dreams they swirl in a cloud
No one will believe them till you say them out loud
     There’s a good chance they’ll think you’re crazy…

The strength of the strong but destroyed ego
That says I’m humble but can’t let the dream go
Pulls me back in the cloud hear me say it out loud
Being lost as I am and have been
I know I can still make the dream come true-and soon
When reality bends ‘round the things I have seen
It will be just like I’ve walked on…the moon…
Dreaming the dreams others dare not explore
Finding the truth and just wanting more
Being lost is how I am and have been
     But I love it.

Redemption

I feel your Heartbeat – from a distance – synchronizing
I don’t even know who you are – Oh…But I’ve known you forever
And you know the truth of the soul that we share
in our darkest hours we’ve always been there – knowing that we’d find each other
Betrayals can’t kill – The faith in our eyes
Misplaced trust unfortunate – but we know where destiny lies
And the moment we meet – The proof it was true
It will be redemption for all that we’ve been through

This song I’ll sing – for you – let it echo in time yet to be
A beacon for forever only the other could say was true
you are the love…. That I’ve searched for…..

This much I know – today – as I put the words on the page
no distance is too far to cross in my journey to you
this song for my true love…. It will be you I adore…..

Come to the edge of the unknown and there I’ll take your hand
We’ll do the leap of faith together – take our final stand
You’re the stranger within that I can’t do without
I know you’re out there of that I’ve no doubt
Betrayals can’t kill – the faith in our eyes
Lost time must be given meaning – the maze of riddles, whys
Will be answered the moment we meet – and the proof it was true
Echoes forever our redemption for all that we’ve been through

The Wall of Sound

Throw a rock watch the ripples move out
An accepted and dealt with intrusion
Put a finger on the wall of sound
See the same or is it illusion
Dare to put your hand in too
What if something grabs hold of you
What if you stepped into the wall of sound

See the colorswirl maze begin
Clearly there is more there than meets the eye
The clues to secrets blink true then fade
They want to tell you you will never die
Dare to ask what they want of you
is there something that we should do
I have come to climb the wall of sound

What’s a barrier – what’s a barrier for
And the portal – with the tight locked door
With the right key you get to go where no one has before
…But you won’t come back to tell the tale…

It is talking calling out your name
Some say the future and the past are one and the same
Destiny’s guidance surely seals your fate
Done come alone…or is it too late…
Dare to stand on a wall of sound
Really take a good look around
You’re brought right back to the shore…

Throw a rock watch the ripples move out…

Don’t Let Tomorrow Come

Give me the quiet peace – of being left alone
let no one disturb the slumber of my raging heart
as time passes slowly by – and moss grows on the stone
know that it’s symbiotic world will be torn apart
and tonight – as the stars burn out one by one
in the fading light – all will be undone
ashes to ashes now – don’t let tomorrow come

So where’s the stolen hope – of being free again
please don’t ask me how I am I could cry
as time passes slowly by – I think I’m escaping then
it returns that helpless feeling and I don’t know why
so tonight – as the stars burn out one by one
just tell me it’s alright – it’s over and done
in the fading light – as I’m drifting off to sleep
tell me I’ve earned the rest – don’t let tomorrow come

I don’t want to wake up to find the waking world the same
on a roller coaster emotion ride it must be a game
give me the quiet peace – of being left alone
the unthinking ways we all hurt the feelings of our friends
step on this one’s toes to help another I’m afraid it never ends
as time passes slowly by – and moss grows on the stone
let tonight – as the stars burn out one by one
be the end of the fight – I just don’t care who has won
make it right – as we watch the setting sun
ashes to ashes now – don’t let tomorrow come
tell me I’ve earned the rest – don’t let tomorrow come
I have past every test – don’t let tomorrow come
Kill me – kill me – don’t let tomorrow come
won’t someone kill me – kill me in my sleep
